My go-to approach for helping people in couples/marriage/relationship counseling is learning to listen for meaning and not focusing on formulating a response. Listening and asking for clarification is key to successful communication in relationships.
I teach the following tools in couples/marriage/relationship counseling: communication styles, negotiation, reflective listening, gratitude for each other, looking for the positives, asking whether is X needed/wanted, “I feel” statements, and how not to “mind read.”
I know a client is making meaningful progress in couples/marriage/relationship counseling when they tell me about a time they were able to communicate and negotiate successfully in a situation or scenario that would have previously resulted in an argument. Also, when one person tells me that they recognized the effort made by their partner and showed appreciation for the effort.
Clients can supplement their time in couples/marriage/relationship counseling by practicing the skills taught or discussed in the session and having time for themselves and each other.
To prepare for your first session, you can discuss with your partner what your goals are for therapy. If you are meeting via Zoom with your therapist, make sure your internet is strong enough for Zoom, make sure you have a private place to meet, schedule some quiet time for after the session, and remind yourself how you felt about your partner at the beginning of your relationship.
Couples therapy and marriage counseling, also known as relationship counseling, helps couples work through their specific relationship issues. Some examples of common focuses within couples therapy and marriage counseling include:

Strong relationships and marriages are built on trust and communication. When both are suffering, it might be time to consider counseling. Couples can benefit from therapy because it provides them a forum to air their concerns to an impartial and trained professional. Talking through issues with a couples therapist can help partners reconnect, find common ground, and build healthier relationships.
For many, couples counseling can help restart a troubled marriage or take a relationship to the next level. If you are ready to prioritize your partnership and your future, consider reaching out for an appointment at Thriveworks in Midland, TX.
Couples often choose to seek relationship counseling when they’re having trouble communicating. Others might want to address their issues before they become untenable. The earlier that relationship issues are addressed, the better the chance for reconciliation.
Couples seek counseling for a variety of reasons. Some might need to address one or more of these issues:
Many couples can benefit from seeing a couples counselor, not only those that feel their relationship is in serious trouble. Marriage and family therapy can also help partners address potential problems before they become serious.
Communication is the cornerstone of a healthy relationship. Without it, conflicts become crises, feelings get hurt, and disagreements turn into long-term resentments. Couples counseling can help address these issues by restoring communication and helping couples understand each other in a deeper and more appreciative way. A couples therapist will encourage partners to be open and honest about their problems. That way, partners learn the source of each other’s issues and how to address them.
Couples counseling can take a variety of forms. Some therapists use the Gottman Method, which founder John Gottman developed over decades of research and clinical trials. The Gottman Method shows couples how to build “love maps” to learn more about each other. Through this method, partners develop more effective ways to manage conflict.
Emotionally focused therapy helps couples grow their emotional attachments and develop stronger bonds. That way, couples learn how to engage with each other during conflict instead of escalating the argument or detaching from it. Meanwhile, narrative therapy helps partners learn more about each other by sharing personal stories, including those that have led to conflict. During therapy sessions, couples externalize the conflicts and learn new narratives that are more helpful and forgiving.
Relationships need work and care to thrive. Occasionally, they also might benefit from a fresh perspective. The couples counselors at Thriveworks are here to help. We make it easy to schedule an appointment. Sessions are available on nights and weekends if your weekdays are busy. First-time clients often can schedule an appointment to be seen within the same week.
If you’re unable to attend traditional therapy, Thriveworks offers online counseling as well. It’s a great way to conduct a session from home or wherever you feel most comfortable. Thriveworks accepts many major insurance plans and has a flexible cancellation policy.
Your relationship is precious and you don’t have to let communication issues weaken it. When you’re ready to prioritize your relationship, consider making an appointment for couples counseling at Thriveworks in Midland, TX. It may be the best gift you give your partner this year.
