What is your go-to approach for couples/marriage counseling?

My go-to approach for helping people in couples/marriage counseling is emotionally focused therapy (EFT). EFT focuses on identifying and reshaping negative communication patterns and emotional responses within the relationship. It aims to strengthen the emotional bond between partners and create a more secure attachment. I also use:

  • Imago relationship therapy: This approach focuses on healing childhood wounds and resolving past relational conflicts that may be affecting the current relationship dynamics. It helps couples understand and empathize with each other's perspectives.
  • Integrative therapy: Many therapists use an integrative approach, drawing on techniques from multiple therapeutic modalities based on the unique needs of each couple. This approach allows for flexibility and customization to address various relationship issues effectively.
  • Narrative therapy: Narrative therapy explores the stories and narratives that couples tell themselves about their relationship. It encourages couples to challenge unhelpful narratives and co-create new, more empowering ones.

What tools do you teach in couples/marriage counseling?

I teach the following tools in couples/marriage counseling:Communication exercises: These exercises help couples improve their communication skills and understand each other better. Examples include active listening exercises, “I” statements, and reflective listening exercises.Conflict resolution techniques: Couples often engage in various techniques to resolve conflicts constructively. These may include problem-solving strategies, compromise techniques, and negotiation skills.Homework assignments: Therapists often assign homework tasks to couples to practice the skills learned in therapy sessions. These assignments may include communication exercises, conflict resolution tasks, or activities aimed at fostering intimacy.Boundary setting: Therapists may help couples establish healthy boundaries and clarify expectations within the relationship.Emotionally focused therapy (EFT): This approach focuses on helping couples understand and manage their emotions to improve their relationship. Techniques may include identifying and expressing emotions, validating feelings, and promoting empathy.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in couples/marriage counseling?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in couples/marriage counseling when:

  • Improved communication: Couples start to communicate more effectively, listening to each other's perspectives, and expressing themselves openly and honestly without fear of judgment or reprisal.
  • Increased understanding: Both partners gain a deeper understanding of each other's needs, feelings, and perspectives. They may develop empathy and compassion for each other's experiences.
  • Enhanced connection: There's a sense of emotional intimacy and connection between partners. They feel closer and more connected on an emotional level, which fosters a stronger bond in the relationship.
  • Behavior changes: Both partners actively work on changing behaviors that contribute to relationship problems. They may break destructive patterns, such as criticism, defensiveness, or stonewalling, and replace them with more positive behaviors.
  • Increased trust: Trust is gradually rebuilt or strengthened between partners. They become more reliable and consistent in their actions, and trust begins to grow as a result.
  • Individual growth: Each partner experiences personal growth and development as a result of the counseling process. They may gain insights into themselves, their behaviors, and their relationship patterns, leading to positive changes in their lives overall.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement couples/marriage counseling?

Clients can supplement their time in couples/marriage counseling with:

  • Practice active listening: Take time to actively listen to your partner without interrupting or formulating your response. This can help build understanding and empathy in your relationship.
  • Reflect on sessions: Reflect on the discussions and insights gained during counseling sessions. Journaling about your thoughts and feelings can help you process information and identify areas for personal growth.
  • Engage in self-care: Take care of your own physical, emotional, and mental well-being. Engage in activities that help you relax and recharge, such as exercise, meditation, hobbies, or spending time with supportive friends and family.
  • Practice communication skills: Practice healthy communication techniques learned in counseling, such as using “I” statements, expressing emotions honestly but respectfully, and avoiding blame and criticism.
  • Seek individual therapy: In addition to couples counseling, consider seeking individual therapy to address personal issues or challenges that may be affecting your relationship. A healthier individual contributes to a healthier relationship.
  • Read relationship resources: Supplement counseling with books, articles, or online resources about relationships, communication, and conflict resolution. Discussing what you've learned with your partner can deepen understanding and encourage positive change.
  • Set goals together: Work with your partner to set goals for your relationship, both short-term and long-term. Regularly check in with each other to track progress and adjust goals as needed.

What should someone do to prepare for starting couples/marriage counseling?

To prepare for your first couples/marriage counseling session, you can:

  • Reflect on relationship dynamics: Take time to individually reflect on the current state of the relationship. Consider what aspects are working well and where there are challenges or conflicts.
  • Identify goals and expectations: Clarify what you hope to achieve through counseling. Discuss with your partner what each of you expects from the process and what specific goals you want to work towards.
  • Open communication channels: Establish open and honest communication with your partner about attending counseling. Ensure that both of you are committed to actively participating and being receptive to feedback.
  • Manage expectations: Understand that counseling is a process that takes time and effort. Be prepared for ups and downs along the way, and understand that progress may not always be linear.
  • Be open to change: Approach counseling with an open mind and a willingness to change behaviors or perspectives that may be contributing to relationship difficulties. Be prepared to explore new ways of thinking and interacting with your partner.
  • Stay positive: Approach counseling with a positive attitude and a belief that positive change is possible. Focus on the strengths of the relationship and the potential for growth and improvement.
  • Address individual needs: Recognize and address any individual issues or concerns that may be impacting the relationship. This might involve seeking individual therapy or support to work through personal challenges.

Starting Couples therapy in Coral Springs

What is couples therapy?

Thriveworks Couples therapy helps couples work through their specific relationship issues. It is led by licensed professionals — often licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) — who are experts in their field and best-equipped to help couples. Some examples of common focuses within couples therapy include:

  • Jealousy
  • Trust issues
  • Infidelity
  • Opposing values
  • Different visions for the future
  • Disagreements in parenting
  • Lack of trust
  • Financial distress
  • Sex issues

How does couples therapy work?

Couples therapy works by helping couples identify and better navigate their unique challenges. Following an initial assessment of the couple in terms of strengths and needs, the therapist would then discuss their therapeutic goals and any possible approaches or ways of working together as therapist and couple.
Couples attend sessions together, whether they meet in person or by video. In addition to regular couples therapy sessions, each partner may also be asked to attend a few individual sessions to supplement their progress. This will allow their counselor to get to know each individual better, assess each of their personal needs, and develop the very best treatment plan moving forward.

Is couples therapy conducted in person or online?

Couples therapy at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and via Online therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you and your partner.

How long does couples therapy last?

On average, couples attend couples therapy for 12 weeks. However, couples therapy may last longer or shorter, dependent on the couples’ needs, the challenges they’d like to work through, and the pace of their progress.

Do We Need to Talk with a Counselor or Therapist?

Deciding whether or not to talk with one of our providers is a personal decision, but it’s one that could benefit your relationship. In fact, couples therapy and marriage counseling at Thriveworks isn’t about being perfect or happy in our relationship all of the time. Instead, it’s about learning to be honest, open, and willing to compromise with our partners.

If you’re in a relationship that’s suffering from unhealthy or negative dynamics, it’s possible that you’re experiencing:

  • Arguments that last for hours or days
  • Passive-aggressive or abusive behavior
  • Inability to respect each other’s boundaries
  • Cheating
  • Avoiding physical touch or sex
  • Lying and other forms of emotional manipulation

These may not be the only signs of a relationship that’s harmful to both partners. You and your loved one may need to discuss the issues at hand to decide whether you would like to salvage your relationship with assistance from a couples therapist or marriage counselor.

Working together as a couple with one of our providers at Thriveworks in Coral Springs, FL can help you and your partner to see each other more clearly.
