Victoria "Vicky" Baxter is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC) who has 7 years of experience providing services to all ages--children, adolescent, and adults--along with couples and family treatment. Vicky’s clinical background includes the Charlie Norwood VA where she worked with veterans of all ages with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety. She then worked for a Community Service Board in Georgia, serving low SES populations and treating severe and persistent mental health issues. Vicky then moved to North Carolina where she has had the opportunity to work with geriatric populations on developmental stage issues, end of life issues, as well as dementia.
Vicky completed her Bachelor of Science (BS) in Psychology at Georgia Southern University and her master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Augusta University. She has been trained in cognitive processing therapy (CPT), relaxation/mindfulness training, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and substance abuse treatment. Vicky’s theoretical orientation includes reality and choice therapy.
Vicky believes that there are many things in the world we cannot control, however there are many elements we can. We do not choose the conditions that we are born into or born with, however we do have a choice in how we respond to them. Vicky’s priority is to help you understand what you are experiencing and what is causing distress in order to make the changes you are looking for and capable of. Vicky attempts to empower her clients to feel control over their lives and choices to reach their goals. Whatever changes you want to make, Vicky is here to walk that journey with you.

My go-to approach for treating anxiety is CBT. I find the best benefit in CBT because it addresses negative patterns and distortions in the way we look at the world and ourselves.
I teach the following tools in anxiety therapy:
I know a client is making meaningful progress in anxiety therapy when there is a reduction in the overall frequency, intensity, and duration of their anxiety so that daily functioning is not impaired.
Clients can supplement their time in anxiety therapy with mindfulness practices and grounding techniques.
To prepare for your first anxiety therapy session, you can come to your first therapy session with an open mind, prepare questions to ask the therapist, be honest, and set realistic goals for therapy.
Anxiety therapy helps people better understand and manage their anxiety. Anxiety therapists at Thriveworks in Charlotte, NC can develop a treatment plan that will help you better manage your day-to-day anxiety or your anxiety disorder.
Anxiety therapy involves talking to a therapist about symptoms, potential causes, and more. Thriveworks Charlotte therapists will then work with you to determine where your anxiety might stem from and teach you effective coping mechanisms.
One of the best ways to deal with anxiety is to learn about your own anxiety: your symptoms, what triggers it, and what coping mechanisms have been effective in the past. When you learn what your anxiety is tied to, it can help you be mindful of what’s really happening as well as prevent and mitigate symptoms by processing and working through the issue in therapy. Other strategies that have been shown to help manage anxiety are meditation, challenging anxious thoughts, exercising, and journaling.
Common symptoms of anxiety include:
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can be incredibly effective in treating anxiety and anxiety disorders. Other effective techniques include exposure therapy, Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and EMDR therapy.
Anxiety therapy is conducted both in person and online, depending on the individual’s preferences and their therapist’s availability. We suggest choosing the option that best suits your needs.
On average, people can tend to attend 15 to 20 session of anxiety therapy (five or more months). However, this number is heavily dependent on the type of anxiety that’s being treated and its severity, with many choosing to attend anxiety therapy for a longer period of time to ensure its effectiveness long-term.
Yes, it is worth going to therapy for anxiety. If you are struggling with regular anxious thoughts and feelings that are affecting your day-to-day life or you suspect that you have an anxiety disorder, you should seek expert anxiety help.
Have you ever experienced an anxiety attack? Have you ever felt nervous or anxious in a public space or big crowd? Have you ever been overwhelmed by anxious thoughts? An anxiety counselor at Thriveworks South Charlotte can help. Anxiety is both a physically and emotionally frightening experience—it can leave you visibly shaken with rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath, and completely on edge. Fortunately, working with a mental health professional can prove effective in helping you to control your anxiety and cope with the scary symptoms that come with it.
If you’ve found yourself in a situation similar to Angela’s, or you experience anxiety on a lower (or higher) scale, consider reaching out to a provider at Thriveworks South Charlotte—we want to help.
Anxiety therapy has proven to help many different people combat the challenges of anxiety. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in specific is incredibly valuable when it comes to the treatment of anxiety, as these therapists focus their efforts on helping the client to change harmful thoughts, which often bring about this anxiety or exacerbate it in some way.
A provider at Thriveworks South Charlotte can help Angela (the fictional character mentioned above) understand that she is experiencing anxiety attacks and not heart attacks, which is a common misunderstanding. Additionally, they can help a client with social phobia realize that strangers aren’t spying on them or concerning themselves with their every move. In summary, these professionals can effectively treat a wide range of clients and their presenting anxiety disorders.
We’re all guilty when it comes to thinking thoughts that just aren’t helpful. For example, if a friend doesn’t text us back right away, we are quick to assume that they’re mad at us. If our boss doesn’t greet us with the level of cheer we expect, we are quick to assume that they’re unhappy with our work. This is a bad (yet normal) habit many of us engage in daily. The good news is we can shake it, or at least cut back. And the counselors at Thriveworks South Charlotte will prove helpful in your mission to do so. Here are a couple pointers they might offer to help you rid yourself of these anxious thoughts:
1) First, accept that everybody worries. The mission here isn’t to completely stop yourself from worrying. The truth is, that’s pretty unrealistic, as worrying is a natural part of life. We worry about getting to work on time and about reaching deadlines; we worry about how our presentation will go or how a date will turn out. And that’s okay! The goal here is to learn to think positive thoughts, rather than negative thoughts when we feel nervous or worried about an upcoming event. A counselor at Thriveworks South Charlotte will help you do so.
2) Now, focus what’s in your control. Once you accept that everybody worries from time to time, focus on fixing what’s in your control. Are you anxious about whether you’ll get to work on time? Then leave in plenty of time to ensure you do get there by 8am—and if you arrive a little late because you got stuck in some crazy traffic, let it go. Acknowledge and accept that this was out of your control. I know: much easier said than done. Don’t worry, your counselor is here to assist you. It’s their job to help!
