About
My aim is to help my clients figure out what is keeping them from realizing their goals and working with them to identify strategies for overcoming those obstacles.
Abdul is a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) who specializes in working with adults who are seeking help with depression, anxiety, bereavement, and substance use disorders. He helps them transform their lives by learning to think about their lives in new and less hurtful ways.
Abdul holds a master’s degree in social work from Howard University’s School of Social Work. Prior to getting his MSW, he was working at an outpatient community mental health center and working on getting certified as an addiction counselor. He employs a variety of techniques including psychoeducation, motivational interviewing, Socratic questioning, and unconditional positive regard. His treatment orientation is heavily influenced by rational emotive and cognitive approaches. Abdul always aims to help clients understand what they want from their lives and to motivate them to achieve those goals.
Abdul's practice is rooted in humanism, the belief that people are self-motivated to pursue their own happiness. He sees his role as a guide who can support you on your journey toward happiness. Abdul accepts that all people are unique, with unique biology, chemistry, life stories, and life goals all their own. He understands that not everyone gets the same start in life and that each of us is uniquely shaped by the challenges and opportunities we encounter in our families of origin, our communities, and our society at large.
Abdul's goal as a professional is to support you as you strive for happiness and help you identify challenges and develop skills to overcome them. Ultimately, he believes that each person he meets is on a quest, searching for a rewarding, meaningful, and fulfilling life. His role is simply to help you get to your destination. "Noted psychiatrist and addiction expert Gabor Maté said that only when compassion is present can healing truly take place. My goal is to be that compassionate presence in your life as you work to understand yourself, identify the source of your unhappiness, and work with you to discover the happiness and life satisfaction that you deserve," says Abdul.

Insomnia therapy is a tailored form of treatment that addresses chronic sleep disturbances, which can include problems with falling asleep, staying asleep, or experiencing restorative sleep. The goal of Insomnia therapy is to enhance sleep quality, establish healthy sleep routines, and, in turn, improve an individual’s overall well-being by mitigating and reducing the adverse effects of persistent sleep deprivation.
Insomnia therapy combines therapeutic approaches, with a central focus on cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) to modify sleep-disrupting thoughts and behaviors, integrating techniques like stimulus control, sleep restriction, and relaxation training. Thriveworks Charleston therapists will also emphasize sleep hygiene education and may include mindfulness and relaxation exercises to improve sleep quality, equipping individuals with effective strategies to enhance their sleep and overall well-being.
Common symptoms of insomnia include:
Symptoms of insomnia often look different for everyone; however, there are some warning signs that can signal the need for insomnia therapy. These include feeling anxious about bedtime, bedtimes getting later and later, energy peaking at night rather than during the day, and drastic caffeine consumption in order to stay awake.
Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is one of the most effective forms of therapy for treating insomnia, working to modify sleep-disrupting thoughts and behaviors through strategies like sleep hygiene and sleep restriction.
Insomnia therapy at Thriveworks Charleston is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.
The duration of insomnia therapy can vary based on the individual’s needs and progress in treatment. Typically, it involves a short series of sessions over a few weeks to a couple of months, with the number and length of sessions decided in consultation with the therapist. Some experience better sleep within this time, while others choose longer therapy to address complex sleep issues or maintain good sleep habits.
Many people start to see improvements in their sleep patterns after about two to three weeks of CBT-I. However, the duration and effectiveness will differ for everyone, so don’t worry if it takes a bit longer to have a strong effect.
Watching the clock go from midnight to one in the morning to two in the morning to three in the morning. You just want to be asleep. Instead, you’ve been up some, most, or even all of the night. Sound familiar? People who suffer from insomnia know that with each waking hour, their chance of a restorative night’s sleep diminishes. Many people suffer from insomnia, but contending with a sleep disturbance can feel lonely and overwhelming. If you are experiencing insomnia or if you wake drained instead of restored, seeking professional help may restore the sleep you need.
Many who suffer from sleep disturbances have benefitted from a holistic, two-step approach to therapy that gives both practical sleep solutions and addresses any possible causes of the insomnia. The therapists at Thriveworks Charleston insomnia counseling take a holistic approach, working to turn their clients’ dreamless nights into the restorative sleep they need. If this sounds like something you could benefit from, reach out to Thriveworks Charleston to schedule an insomnia therapy appointment.
Each person who suffers from sleep deprivation is unique. Some people have difficulty falling asleep. Some people have difficulty staying asleep. Some people seemingly sleep, but they wake exhausted and drained instead of refreshed and rested.
Insomnia can be triggered by a variety of life circumstances, or it can occur independently. Sometimes stress from big life events can cause sleep disturbances. Have you experienced a big life transition recently? Changes in job, family, finances, and living situation can cause stress that manifests as insomnia. Unfortunately, insomnia can also be a secondary effect of other health problems. Sleep disturbances often accompany depression, menopause, hyperthyroidism, and many other health problems.
Insomnia can also develop on its own, without warning or accompanying health problems. Regardless of its cause, people who suffer from insomnia know the difficult effects it can have on their daily life. Can you relate to John’s experience?
John works a night shift. Working a different schedule from his family has been difficult, but he has always been able to get enough sleep… until recently. Within the past few months, John has had difficulty sleeping. At first he was not too concerned, but after three months of sleep deprivation, he has noticed that everyday tasks have become harder. John has had difficulty focusing while driving home from work. Last week, he almost fell asleep at the wheel. For his safety and health, John is ready to seek help.
John is not alone in experiencing the difficulties insomnia brings to daily life. Common side effects of insomnia include:
Our professionals take a thorough, two-step approach to therapy. First, we know that you need to sleep—and soon. Our therapists help their clients find practical sleep solutions. Second, we also know that insomnia can have various causes. Our therapists help their clients examine anything that could be underlying the insomnia, equipping them with the tools they need for long-term sleep success.
Our therapists help their clients develop a sleep plan—practical solutions for their sleep deprivation. Together, the therapist and client think through ways to optimize sleep. A sleep plan may include…
Are there underlying beliefs or habits or causes of the insomnia? Our therapists have the training and experience to determine if any deeper issues may be contributing to the sleep disturbances. Some people fall into the false belief that they will never have regular sleep again. This belief then raises stress and anxiety about not sleeping and leads to less sleep. Our therapists have helped their clients identify and address any beliefs that may be contributing to the insomnia.
For others, the insomnia is a result of stress from a major life change. Developing coping strategies for the stress addresses this foundational cause and equips people with healthy alternatives to managing stress, should it arise again. Similarly, if insomnia accompanies PTSD or an anxiety disorder, our therapists have helped their clients receive the treatment they need for the insomnia and the accompanying disorder.
