What is your go-to approach for anxiety therapy?

My approach to working with individuals who are experiencing anxiety is to identify why they are anxious and explored the cognitive processes involved in the anxiety.

What tools do you teach in anxiety therapy?

I teach the following clients who are experiencing anxiety how to remain calm in the situation by using mindfulness strategies and breathing techniques. Once they have calmed down then they can explore the emotions/thoughts that they have experiences and decide which ones that they would like to either change or let go of.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in anxiety therapy?

I know then a client is making progress with their anxiety by self-report that their symptoms have either lessened or become more manageable.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement anxiety therapy?

Clients can supplement their time outside of session though the use of journaling and Socratic questioning regarding their anxiety. Socratic questioning helps clients move out of their emotional state and into a logical state.

What should someone do to prepare for starting anxiety therapy?

Client's can prepare for their first session for their anxiety by making some goals on what they would like to see different for themselves.

Starting Anxiety therapy

What is anxiety therapy?

Anxiety therapy helps people better understand and manage their anxiety. Anxiety therapists at Thriveworks in Bastrop, TX can develop a treatment plan that will help you better manage your day-to-day anxiety or your anxiety disorder.

How does anxiety therapy work?

Anxiety therapy involves talking to a therapist about symptoms, potential causes, and more. Thriveworks Bastrop therapists will then work with you to determine where your anxiety might stem from and teach you effective coping mechanisms.

How to deal with anxiety?

One of the best ways to deal with anxiety is to learn about your own anxiety: your symptoms, what triggers it, and what coping mechanisms have been effective in the past. When you learn what your anxiety is tied to, it can help you be mindful of what’s really happening as well as prevent and mitigate symptoms by processing and working through the issue in therapy. Other strategies that have been shown to help manage anxiety are meditation, challenging anxious thoughts, exercising, and journaling.

Symptoms of anxiety

Common symptoms of anxiety include:

  • Sense of impending danger
  • Nervousness/restlessness
  • Trouble focusing
  • Excessive sweating
  • Shaking
  • Headaches
  • Stomach issues
  • Fatigue
  • Panic attacks
  • Increased heart rate

What is the best therapy for anxiety?

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can be incredibly effective in treating anxiety and anxiety disorders. Other effective techniques include exposure therapy, Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and EMDR therapy.

Is anxiety therapy conducted in person or online?

Anxiety therapy is conducted both in person and online, depending on the individual’s preferences and their therapist’s availability. We suggest choosing the option that best suits your needs.

How long does anxiety therapy last?

On average, people can tend to attend 15 to 20 session of anxiety therapy (five or more months). However, this number is heavily dependent on the type of anxiety that’s being treated and its severity, with many choosing to attend anxiety therapy for a longer period of time to ensure its effectiveness long-term.

Is therapy worth it for anxiety?

Yes, it is worth going to therapy for anxiety. If you are struggling with regular anxious thoughts and feelings that are affecting your day-to-day life or you suspect that you have an anxiety disorder, you should seek expert anxiety help.

Anxiety Therapy Options at Thriveworks

Some of the treatment options for anxiety that are available at Thriveworks may include:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT): This widely-used approach helps individuals identify and challenge negative thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to anxiety. Through CBT, clients learn coping strategies to manage their anxiety symptoms effectively.
  • Exposure therapy: Exposure therapy involves gradually exposing individuals to feared situations or objects in a safe environment. This helps them confront their fears and learn that they can tolerate anxiety without resorting to avoidance behaviors.
  • Mindfulness-based therapy: Mindfulness techniques, such as meditation and deep breathing exercises, are incorporated to help individuals develop present-moment awareness and reduce anxiety symptoms. Mindfulness-based approaches promote acceptance of thoughts and feelings without judgment.
  • Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT): ACT combines mindfulness techniques with strategies to help individuals accept their thoughts and feelings, commit to values-driven actions, and increase psychological flexibility in the face of anxiety.
  • Medication management: Psychiatrists at Thriveworks may prescribe medications such as antidepressants or anti-anxiety medications to alleviate severe anxiety symptoms, particularly when combined with therapy.
  • Relaxation techniques: Therapists may teach relaxation techniques such as progressive muscle relaxation or guided imagery to help individuals reduce physical tension and promote relaxation in times of stress or anxiety.

Kris Fredericksen has helped me immensely over the past couple of years. I have progressed in leaps and bounds since I first started attending sessions with her. I have had a traumatic childhood, stage 4 cancer, and was in an abusive relationship with an extreme narcissist. After that relationship, my self-esteem was almost non-existent. Shortly after that relationship I started having sessions with Kris. Since then, I have become more stable in life and very successful in my career. I still see Kris and will continue to as life will continue to have its ups and downs. I know I can rely upon Kris to help me take on and learn from anything that comes my way. Life is a great big learning lesson and sometimes you just need someone to give you the right perspective to help you understand, to cope and to grow. Kris is the highly trained professional that I needed and still need to help me continue on that path.
