My go-to approach for depression is person-centered therapy (PCT). I try to understand each client’s depression, their feelings, and the impact of their feelings on their quality of life. I use cognitive behavioral (CBT) approaches and mindfulness skills with folks impacted by depression often.
I support clients by teaching them to understand their triggers, detangling the depression from the self, using CBT techniques, and encouraging a medication consult if appropriate.
Clients can know they’re making meaningful progress if their symptoms improve, if they feel more masterful to manage their depression, and/or if their quality of life increases at all.
To supplement depression counseling clients can exercise (the most underutilized antidepressant we have!), use their Safety Plan (if needed), connect with trusted people in their lives, and/or seek a medication consult with a psychiatry provider.
To prepare for depression counseling, understand your goals for therapy and what you’d like to see happen.
