About
Dr. Alberto Figueroa is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC, CFT) and a Certified Family Therapist with more than 17 years of experience working with individuals, couples, and families. He specializes in treating anxiety, depression, chronic stress, couples issues, family conflict, and more.
He earned his Master's degree in Clinical Counseling and went on to earn a Doctoral degree in Counseling Psychology from Northcentral University. Additionally, he studied structural family therapy to understand people's interconnectedness. He uses a combined approach to counseling that maintains one theoretical perspective as its foundation (Adlerian psychodynamic therapy) and applies interventions from other theories to individualize treatment.
Dr. Al believes therapy helps individuals become aware of the obstacles that hinder their goals. Armed with awareness, persons can examine behavior patterns, discover alternative possibilities, implement change, and learn to accept their reality. However, therapy works best when clients and counselors work collaboratively to achieve the desired objectives.
Dr. Al has helped many persons overcome life challenges and learn to live fulfilling lives by developing a caring relationship and using multiple counseling interventions. He looks forward to developing therapeutic relationships that empower individuals to become their best selves and enhance the quality of their lives.

My go-to approach for helping people in online therapy is to first build a solid counselor-client relationship. Once this relationship is established, I am able to continue building a good rapport, while also maintaining a safe and comfortable environment for the client, and working with the client to identify their strengths and abilities. I then apply principles from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which I find beneficial for clients because it helps them replace negative thoughts with healthier ones once we have identified the client’s strengths and abilities.
I teach the following tools in online therapy:
I know a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy when they become more insightful (such as: bringing a list of topics to discuss such as their progress outside of therapy and feedback with how online therapy is going), are independently applying the skills and techniques they learned in sessions, and report feeling more confident in tackling their life goals.
Clients can supplement their time in online therapy by researching additional resources to support their journey in completing their treatment plan goals, such as videos, podcasts, online articles, and books. Clients can also monitor their experiences and symptoms by logging them into a journal and then relaying the information to their therapist. Tracking these steps will show where progress has been made or changes may need to happen.
To prepare for your first online therapy session, make sure you have signed the informed consent in your online portal account. Without it, the initial appointment will have to be rescheduled. You also need to make sure you have a stable internet connection and have the online platform downloaded and ready to go. Practicing how to use the online platform is always encouraged if you are not familiar with it. Additionally, it is important to make sure that you have a safe, comfortable, and private location without any distractions for the therapy sessions. As far as the session itself, it is important to note that the initial appointment is where background information is gathered such as your presenting problems and symptoms. This information would then be the focus of your future therapy sessions.
With Thriveworks, Online therapy is an effective alternative to in-person therapy services in which a client can speak to a Thriveworks therapist remotely via online video conferencing. Online sessions are just as effective as in-person treatment, but they can also provide added benefits like reduced travel time, saving money on transportation or childcare, and increased access to care.
Online therapy works much like traditional in-person therapy but takes place through secure video conferencing. Clients can attend Online therapy from any safe place they choose that has access to the internet, whether that be their home or another easily accessible place. Like in-person treatment, a therapist will work with their client to address their concerns, create goals, and establish an effective treatment plan.
There is no best option for online therapy—instead, it’s best to focus on finding a provider that meets your specific needs and with whom you can form a professional connection with.
Yes, online therapy is just as effetive for many clients as in-person sessions.
Online therapy can last for a few months to years depending on the goals and symptoms of the client. The treatment process will be unique to each client and lend itself to their specific concerns, which means that the time it takes to treat them will always be different. Timing is also up to the client themselves; they are free to stop therapy whenever they please, especially if they feel they have reached their goals and addressed their concerns.
At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay. We also offer self-pay options for those out-of-network or without insurance. Self-pay rates for talk therapy range from $160 to $240 for intake sessions and $135 to $195 for follow-ups, depending on your state. For psychiatry services, self-pay intake sessions are $255–$375, with follow-ups ranging from $175–$300, also varying by state. More information on current self-pay costs is available on our pricing page.
Are you looking for a more convenient way to see your counselor or coach? Are you having difficulty getting time off of work or away from home to come to see your counselor or coach in person? Do you want to improve yourself and finally tackle your goals but just cannot find the time to travel to and from the physical office? If so, call us at Thriveworks-Reading; we have counselors and coaches available to help you thrive!
Telehealth, or online counseling, utilizes videoconferencing to provide virtual sessions to address medical, physical health, and mental health concerns. It provides our clients and therapists with the ability to meet via long-distance in real time online through a video chat online. Telehealth counseling can be useful for individual therapy, family therapy, couples therapy, group therapy, coaching, psychoeducation, consultations, feedback, and diagnostic purposes.
Telehealth counseling is provided during a videoconferencing session in real time. Telehealth improves access to therapists, improves care continuation, reduces transportation and childcare barriers, brings your therapist to where you are, decreases the wait to receive care, and reduces the stigma surrounding mental health care so you can thrive. Telehealth counseling allows the counselor and client to work together on treatment goals no matter the distance between them. Telehealth counseling is an effective treatment option for many different counseling concerns including but not limited to mood disorders, depression, anxiety, couples concerns, co-parenting, family therapy, stress related disorders, and more. Telehealth counseling is convenient, fits easily into your daily life, and improves access to therapists.
Forget the car, forget the gas, in order to participate in telehealth counseling services you will need a computer or tablet or smart phone. You will also need a reliable internet connection. You need a room or place you feel comfortable to sit for your appointment. A headset and microphone to keep your session from being heard by others around are optional but may be helpful to you. In addition, you will need the link to the telehealth platform your counselor provides to you. Lastly, you will need the time set aside for your designated appointment and the desire to reach your goals.
At Thriveworks Reading, our therapists have the ability to provide telehealth counseling sessions in each of their respective therapeutic modalities as described in their profiles. Please note that, typically, many insurance companies do cover telehealth services; however it is important to check with your specific insurance to ensure this is true. We will work with you to schedule an appointment that fits into your weekly agenda from the convenience of your home or other chosen location. As always we will sit down with you via the telehealth videoconferencing platform. We will listen to you, show care and concern, address your concerns, and help you work toward your goals. The treatment interventions and modalities we utilize via telehealth do not differ from those we use in our physical offices. Telehealth is appropriate for adults, adolescents, and in many cases for children as well. Many wonder if telehealth is HIPAA compliant and for that reason it is important to note that we here at Thriveworks-Reading utilize a variety of HIPAA compliant videoconferencing telehealth platforms to ensure your trust, confidentiality, and safety. Call us now to schedule your appointment so you can thrive!
