What is your go-to approach for couples/marriage counseling?

My go-to approach for helping people in couples/marriage counseling is a holistic approach, combining multiple theories including emotionally focused therapy and aspects of the Gottman method. I find the best benefit in a multifaceted approach to address the unique needs of each couple.

What tools do you teach in couples/marriage counseling?

I teach the following tools in couples/marriage counseling: determining desired outcomes (what is the ideal relationship); communication techniques; nurturing affection and fondness; goal-oriented problem solving; and exploration of emotions, relationship patterns, and coping patterns.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in couples/marriage counseling?

I know clients are making meaningful progress when they develop greater satisfaction and contentment in their relationship.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement couples/marriage counseling?

Clients can supplement their time in couples/marriage counseling by implementing the communication tools explored in sessions. They may also choose to utilize workbooks in between sessions.

What should someone do to prepare for starting couples/marriage counseling?

To prepare for your first couples/marriage counseling session, you can determine your desired outcome and think about what your ideal relationship looks like.

Starting Couples therapy in Troy

What is couples therapy?

Thriveworks Couples therapy helps couples work through their specific relationship issues. It is led by licensed professionals — often licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) — who are experts in their field and best-equipped to help couples. Some examples of common focuses within couples therapy include:

  • Jealousy
  • Trust issues
  • Infidelity
  • Opposing values
  • Different visions for the future
  • Disagreements in parenting
  • Lack of trust
  • Financial distress
  • Sex issues

How does couples therapy work?

Couples therapy works by helping couples identify and better navigate their unique challenges. Following an initial assessment of the couple in terms of strengths and needs, the therapist would then discuss their therapeutic goals and any possible approaches or ways of working together as therapist and couple.
Couples attend sessions together, whether they meet in person or by video. In addition to regular couples therapy sessions, each partner may also be asked to attend a few individual sessions to supplement their progress. This will allow their counselor to get to know each individual better, assess each of their personal needs, and develop the very best treatment plan moving forward.

Is couples therapy conducted in person or online?

Couples therapy at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and via Online therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you and your partner.

How long does couples therapy last?

On average, couples attend couples therapy for 12 weeks. However, couples therapy may last longer or shorter, dependent on the couples’ needs, the challenges they’d like to work through, and the pace of their progress.

Couples Therapy in Troy, MI—Oakland Couples Therapists, Counselors

Thriveworks Troy Counseling has couples therapists who are trained and ready to help you and your partner work through your issues and get back to a better mental state. You can call our office (248) 764-4182 if you would like to take the next step in mending your relationship.

Who Can Benefit from Working with an Oakland Couples Therapist?

All relationships can benefit from the help of a couples counselor. Some of the conflicts and events that a Thriveworks therapist can help couples with include, but are not limited to:

  • Poor communication
  • Financial issues
  • Decrease in intimacy or connection
  • Jealousy
  • Resentfulness
  • Different views on important issues
  • An affair and infidelity
  • Frustration

These are just some of the examples of the conflicts that you and your partner may be dealing with. However, you can also benefit from working with a couples therapist even if you aren’t sure of what the issue may be. The goal is to tackle what you are going through as a team and deepen your connection together.

The Perks of Couples Therapy

Once you decide to pursue couples therapy, a Thriveworks Troy Counseling therapist in Oakland County will work with you and your partner to accurately assess what tools and skills will help you in the future. Here are just a few examples of what you can benefit from in therapy:

  1. Turn thoughts into action: Just talking about the issues at hand won’t necessarily always resolve the problem. It’s important to learn how to enact change by turning your thoughts into actions. Your therapist will help you achieve this through exercises and giving you the tools you need.
  2. Improve overall communication: Sometimes it’s hard to tell your partner how you feel without getting flustered. It’s also hard to tell how your partner prefers to communicate! Don’t worry, your counselor will know how to help you build effective communication skills.
  3. Don’t place blame: It’s easy to point the finger when something goes wrong. Taking responsibility for your thoughts and actions is crucial when building trust in your relationship. Instead of accusing your partner of doing or saying something, you’ll learn how to better express what you are feeling without placing blame.
  4. Remember the good: When times get tough, it’s easy to forget why you are with your partner in the first place. Slowing down and taking the time to acknowledge all of the positive reasons why you are with your partner will allow you to build a stronger connection and friendship.

These strategies are just a few of the ways you can benefit from seeking the help of a couples therapist. Our counselors are well-equipped to help you take your challenges face on and come out feeling happier and healthier.

Rosemary has been nothing short of exceptional. She is so compassionate and clearly cares about her work. Rosemary has made me feel seen as a person, and provided a comfortable space for me to feel safe being vulnerable and open. She's compassionate in the way she speaks while simultaneously helping me to be more honest with myself so that I can get better. I could not think of a better provider to have helped me in the way Rosemary has!

This has been my first ever experience with therapy. My first phone call to get started I was treated with so much kindness and validation. My introduction session was also such a huge relief. I absolutely brag about my therapist. I feel so safe and so heard and understood. I have recommended thriveworks to a friend who got started and has had positive feedback as well. I am so grateful for every session. I've learned a lot about myself and feel so encouraged to continue to become a better version of myself.
