Pamela’s professional goal is to assist in making lives happier, healthier, and more fulfilling. She describes herself as a pragmatic humanistic psychotherapist who leads with compassion. Pamela is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker practicing for over 30 years in California, New Mexico, and Michigan — where she practices currently. She has expertise in helping individuals cope with life stressors, transitions, depression, anxiety, trauma, relationship issues and marital counseling, family issues, 2SLGBTQIA support, grief and loss, substance abuse, adjustment disorders, ADHD, adjustment to school, mood changes, self-esteem, anger management, postpartum depression, overcoming burn-out, care management, and life coaching. She received both her Bachelor’s in Psychology and a Master's in Social Work from the University of Michigan, where she graduated with honors. She has spent over three decades working with individuals, children, and families helping improve the quality of their lives and relationships. Pamela takes a well-rounded, global approach to behavioral health encompassing aspects from several schools of psychology including cognitive behavioral, existential, humanistic, and psychodynamic theories. In addition to providing individual counseling, Pamela has also worked as a School Social Worker and Hospital/Medical Social Worker. Keith Thomas is a Licensed Professional Counselor with 11 years of experience supporting children and their families. Anxiety is a common but challenging issue to deal with. I take an eclectic approach, but it starts with dialectical behavior therapy to teach clients how to soothe themselves, finding the things feeding their anxiety. Then, we might cover education on what the ten most common causes of anxiety are. This will also usually lead to the use of cognitive behavioral therapy, which will challenge the mindsets that give power to anxious thoughts. In cases of trauma, EMDR and tapping techniques can be used, too.
The key to managing anxiety is understanding the cause and finding ways to minimize it. Sometimes it is one's mindsets, sometimes it is trauma, sometimes it is a lifestyle that does not allow space for self-care, and sometimes it is a lack of boundaries or allowing those who do not treat you well to have too much power in your life. When one finds the reason, one can find the remedy.
I know a client is making progress when I see a shift in them that shows a life that has more joy instead of one that they want to run at times from.
To supplement therapy, I often recommend exercises to do at home. A resource I have used often is the “Anxiety and Phobia Workbook” by Bourne. I also encourage people to be detectives and look for things that soothe them, such as spiritual practices, yoga, meditation, nature walks, art, music, or journaling.
