Life is full of challenges. Traffic on the way to work every morning, lines wrapped around the Starbucks building, late assignments, and even fights with your significant other over who is cleaning up after dinner. These small bumps in the road are easy for us to overcome. Maybe you try a new route, find a different Starbucks, and work late one day to make up for lost time. However, it’s when the challenges become too difficult, too big to work through, that we fall into a pit that feels like we can’t crawl out of

The Many Faces of Depression

The symptoms and feelings that are associated with depression ebb and flow. The way you experience depression is entirely different than the way your neighbor does. Loss of interest, major changes of appetite, sleep issues, low self-esteem, and feelings of guilt are all signs of depression. Here are some examples of what depression looks like for different people:

  • Chelsea tends to worry a lot. It’s in her nature. She works really hard at her job and feels unsatisfied if she doesn’t do things exactly right. Some call her a perfectionist, she sees herself as hardworking. Because she’s constantly trying to do things exactly right, she’s caused herself to have a low self-esteem and is sensitive to criticism. Anytime she thinks she messes up or does something wrong, she beats herself up and can’t seem to pull herself out of that mental space.
  • Larry’s mom has battled depression his entire life. While there have been a lot of lows, his mom has always tried to put on a good face and stay strong for her family. Larry noticed signs of his own depression in college and now struggles with it as an adult with his own family. He feels a lot of pressure at work and has a hard time getting home early enough to spend time with his family before bed. He tries to stay strong like his mom once did for him, but sometimes it’s hard to stay positive.
  • Alexis was diagnosed with a deadly cancer when she was in high school. After almost two years battling this disease and almost losing her life, she miraculously recovered and has been cancer-free since. Although she is now healthy and thriving as an adult, she still has a hard time coping with what she went through. When she goes to the hospital for her yearly scans, it makes her flood with emotions. She wants to be able to live her life fully but feels like it’s impossible because of her past situation.

Karen Osborne is amazing ! Listened and heard to everything I had to share. I felt easy to share. She analyzed and explained. She is a very professional and kind person. She made me feel like I was worthy of more and then, she went one step further and walked me through the process of my recovery. Not everyone can be so lucky to say the same.
