Justin Michaud is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LCPC) with over 7 years of professional experience working with clients of all ages to help them cope with family conflict, couple's issues, PTSD, trauma, depression, stress, and more.
Justin served as a Director of therapy services at a residential program for young adults and has seen some of the lowest valleys that patients have walked through, and sat with them in that valley so that their loneliness was not so daunting on the journey of empowerment and recovery. They have also seen patients on the highest peaks of their life and stood with them as they basked in their triumphs of empowerment and recovery.
Justin can be the guide that you need when you feel lost along your journey through life and would be honored if you allow them to help you achieve the mental health you desire.

Combining my experience as a teacher and PMHNP for the VA, I take a brain-based, compassionate approach to help individuals of all ages improve mental wellness and reconnect with what makes life meaningful.
I am a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner with 7 years of experience helping individuals understand their minds, emotions, and behaviors on a deeper level. My journey into mental health began with a passion for connection, compassion, and the healing power of self-awareness. I’ve had the privilege of supporting clients through anxiety, depression, trauma, and life transitions, guiding them toward clarity and confidence. I believe that growth begins when we feel seen, understood, and empowered to participate in our own healing process.
I earned my Doctorate in Nursing from the University of San Diego, where I strengthened my clinical and neuroscience foundation. My approach is collaborative and trauma-informed, integrating evidence-based strategies with empathy and mindfulness. I aim to help clients find balance, insight, and sustainable progress in their mental health journey.
If you’ve been carrying the weight of expectations, struggling to rest, or feeling disconnected, I want you to know change is possible. Together, we can explore what balance looks like, develop tools for emotional regulation, and rediscover peace and purpose. Healing isn’t about perfection; it’s about understanding your own rhythm and reclaiming your calm.
You deserve dedicated time with a mental health professional — it can be life-changing.

Disorders like depression and anxiety are problems primarily linked to people’s emotions and feelings. Most people have felt sadness or anxiety at times and these are normal reactions to everyday events. A problem begins when these feelings are exceptionally intense and last for far longer than what is considered normal – as a result they can start to impact a person’s ability to function normally.
If you are struggling with depression, anxiety, or both, reach out to Thriveworks Portland for help. We’re here for you.
Unfortunately, there are no simple blood tests or physical examinations which can be used to diagnose depression and anxiety disorders. As a result, health practitioners rely on matching a patient’s subjective feelings and symptoms to a list of symptoms known for each condition. Some of the most common indications of depression and anxiety include:
It is clear that depression and anxiety are linked to emotional states that are felt at particularly high levels and during extended time periods. As a result, the cause of these problems is often linked directly to particularly traumatic phases of a person’s life or to episodes of very severe stress. Events such as passing away of a loved one, divorce and losing a job are common developments that can trigger the disorders.
Whilst these links are quite clear, scientists are still not 100% certain about what happens from a physiological standpoint to a person when they develop one of the disorders. It appears that the balance of chemicals in the brain and the organ’s structures can be altered by the event, causing the emotions to persist.
The process in which depression and anxiety are treated can be very complex. Whilst there are a number of different methods – medical, lifestyle and talk-based therapy – it is often a combination of these that is the most effective path for the patient.
Talk-based therapies, such as those provided by Thriveworks Portland, are often successful at identifying and treating the root cause of the problem. Helping to manage the symptoms is typically the major focus of the treatment, yet it is the successful identification and management of the root cause which renders full remission more likely.
