My passion is to help people feel heard and empowered to live their best lives.

Hear from our clinicians

What is your go-to approach for online therapy?

Heather: My go-to approach for helping people in online therapy is to try to build a strong base for the therapeutic relationship so that the client will still feel safe enough to be vulnerable and share their story.

Rhoda: My go-to approach for helping people in online therapy is to help the client understand and process their feelings, which ultimately allows for emotional or behavioral change. I enjoy connecting with clients because that connection allows clients to feel heard and safe enough to make changes.

What tools do you teach in online therapy?

Heather: I teach the following tools in online therapy:

  • Cognitive restructuring, which involves disputing the distortions that underpin a client’s challenges.
  • Journaling, which is a form of self-monitoring that helps clients identify their thought patterns and emotional tendencies.
  • Stress reduction exercises such as meditation and progressive muscle relaxation can be effective CBT tools for managing anxiety.
  • Diaphragmatic breathing, which is a mindfulness practice. Clients learn to regulate their breath and activate their body’s relaxation response.
  • Exposure and response prevention, which involves exposing yourself to whatever it is that normally elicits a compulsive behavior, but doing your best to refrain from the behavior.
  • Successive approximation, which helps the client to learn about breaking the large goal into small, easy-to-accomplish steps, so they can map out the path to success and make the journey seem a little less overwhelming.

Rhoda: I teach the following tools in online therapy:

  • Help clients identify their negative thought patterns and resulting feelings and behaviors
  • Help clients understand their values and where their thoughts and feelings originate
  • Help clients to modify their negative thoughts and behaviors to be more positive
  • Help clients learn various coping tools and relaxation techniques such as guided meditation, mindfulness training, and muscle relaxation
  • Help clients improve their communication skills using assertive communication and active listening

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy?

Heather: I know a client is making meaningful progress in individual therapy when they are seeing their symptoms reduce and tracking that with validated measures like the PHQ-9 or the GAD-7.

Rhoda: I know a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy when they express having more confidence in themselves. They express more positive interactions with themselves and others and are doing activities that they enjoy.

Heather: Clients can supplement their time in individual therapy through group therapy, reading therapist-recommended books or podcasts, and watching recommended films or videos, to name a few.

Rhoda: I encourage clients to practice the skills and utilize the tools we discuss in sessions. Clients can supplement their time in online therapy by reading and researching ideas and tools on their own.

What should someone do to prepare for starting online therapy?

Heather: To prepare for your first individual therapy session, you can read the bio of the therapist you will be seeing to get an idea of who they are. You can also prepare questions, set realistic goals, and most importantly, keep an open mind and a willingness to explore new ideas.

Rhoda: To prepare for your first online therapy session, you can come with an openness to share your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors and what you wish to accomplish through therapy. While online therapy may not be for everyone, more and more people find it very helpful, with the added benefit of flexibility, comfort, and time.

Starting Online therapy

What is online therapy?

With Thriveworks, Online therapy is an effective alternative to in-person therapy services in which a client can speak to a Thriveworks therapist remotely via online video conferencing. Online sessions are just as effective as in-person treatment, but they can also provide added benefits like reduced travel time, saving money on transportation or childcare, and increased access to care.

How does online therapy work?

Online therapy works much like traditional in-person therapy but takes place through secure video conferencing. Clients can attend Online therapy from any safe place they choose that has access to the internet, whether that be their home or another easily accessible place. Like in-person treatment, a therapist will work with their client to address their concerns, create goals, and establish an effective treatment plan.

What is the best option for online therapy?

There is no best option for online therapy—instead, it’s best to focus on finding a provider that meets your specific needs and with whom you can form a professional connection with.

Is online therapy just as effective?

Yes, online therapy is just as effetive for many clients as in-person sessions.

How long does online therapy last?

Online therapy can last for a few months to years depending on the goals and symptoms of the client. The treatment process will be unique to each client and lend itself to their specific concerns, which means that the time it takes to treat them will always be different. Timing is also up to the client themselves; they are free to stop therapy whenever they please, especially if they feel they have reached their goals and addressed their concerns.

How much does online therapy cost?

Our Thriveworks therapists at Thriveworks in Portage, MI accept most major forms of insurance, which means that many of our clients only pay $0-$50 co-pay per session. However, there are also self-pay options that sit around $200 per session, depending on the service and location, for those who are out-of-network.

Need more help deciding?

Many people are exploring the increased use of technology in order to receive services via the internet.  We talk to many clients who are interested in online counseling and are not sure what to expect.  At Thriveworks Counseling in Portage, we are able to provide counseling telehealth services for a large range of conditions and issues.

Our clinicians are able to see clients from all over the state in the comfort of their own homes, car, office or wherever else clients are comfortable receiving services. Reach out today to get started.

How Does Online Counseling Work?

Online counseling at Thriveworks is done over video. Before your first appointment, your therapist will email you a link for your session, which you’ll click at the start of your session time. During your first session, your therapist is going to want to review your intake form with you, talk with you about informed consent and then get an understanding of your goals and challenges. Before you sign off, your therapist will set out several future appointments so you have a consistent schedule.

Telehealth counseling has been available for quite a while, but due to the rise in available technology and concerns about viral outbreaks, it is becoming more and more popular.  At Thriveworks Counseling in Portage, we are prepared to serve you as a telehealth provider.

This will be short since I can only type with one hand currently, but I thoroughly enjoyed my first session with Dan. He seems very patient, thoughtful, and intelligent. I look forward to working with him and letting him pick my brain to help me become a healthier and more balanced person!

Cassie met with my cousin for several sessions to discuss issues related to my cousin's childhood. Cassie helped my cousin assess her feelings in a balanced way . She was also very supportive, listening and providing feedback effectively without being judgmental. This was exactly what my cousin needed. A very rare technique among many counselors these days.

Rudy was professional and approachable. He was able to point out beliefs I had that were interfering with my ability to enjoy my life, but did so in a respectful manner. He was an effective therapist, with a genuine, caring approach.

Heather has always been the person that many people go to for advice and help. When she isn't helping people at work she is helping people at our church. All of the staff at Thriveworks are great. I highly recommend Thriveworks Counseling.
