Starting Couples therapy

What is couples therapy?

Thriveworks Couples therapy helps couples work through their specific relationship issues. It is led by licensed professionals — often licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) — who are experts in their field and best-equipped to help couples. Some examples of common focuses within couples therapy include:

  • Jealousy
  • Trust issues
  • Infidelity
  • Opposing values
  • Different visions for the future
  • Disagreements in parenting
  • Lack of trust
  • Financial distress
  • Sex issues

How does couples therapy work?

Couples therapy works by helping couples identify and better navigate their unique challenges. Following an initial assessment of the couple in terms of strengths and needs, the therapist would then discuss their therapeutic goals and any possible approaches or ways of working together as therapist and couple.
Couples attend sessions together, whether they meet in person or by video. In addition to regular couples therapy sessions, each partner may also be asked to attend a few individual sessions to supplement their progress. This will allow their counselor to get to know each individual better, assess each of their personal needs, and develop the very best treatment plan moving forward.

Is couples therapy conducted in person or online?

Couples therapy at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and via Online therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you and your partner.

How long does couples therapy last?

On average, couples attend couples therapy for 12 weeks. However, couples therapy may last longer or shorter, dependent on the couples’ needs, the challenges they’d like to work through, and the pace of their progress.

Couples Therapy at Thriveworks Counseling: How Can It Help?

Couples therapy is for new couples, old couples, those who are struggling with severe problems, and those who are simply interested in strengthening their already strong foundation. “There is a large gamma of issues that can develop within individuals and that exponentially increases when we are discussing relationships,” explains Lilliam Rodriquez, a Licensed Clinical Psychologist at our Norwalk office. “Intimate relationships include several areas and within any of those areas there can be challenges. In couples therapy, you can expect to discuss concerns with communication, compatibility, sexuality, boundaries, extended family members, children, finances, etc. Couples therapy can also be beneficial for couples that are looking to increase/formalize their commitment and want to ‘start off on the right foot’, couples that are facing divorce and would like to do so in a respectful and amicable fashion, as well as couples that are facing challenges with life transitions such as the birth of a child, the loss of a child, empty nest, retirement, etc.”

The reason the majority of couples who seek couples therapy suffer with serious problems is because often, we turn to counseling as a last resort. We do everything possible to manage the problem or resolve it on our own. Then, and only then, will we consider reaching out for help. Why? Because we have a fear of judgment or negative perception. We want you to know that you do not have to worry about being perceived as weak here at Thriveworks Counseling in Norwalk, CT. We provide our clients with a safe, inclusive space—one in which we will help you to iron out your problems and get to a healthier, happier place.

Work with a Couples Therapist at Thriveworks Counseling in Norwalk, CT

“Couples therapy works by creating an objective and safe space for the couple to address their challenges and learn how to address future challenges,” says Rodriquez. “Couples therapy is effective because it allows the couple to address their issues in a different manner, with a different lens and in a way where each individual in the relationship can understand their role in the dysfunction rather than whose fault it is or casting blame and shame.”

As we’ve mentioned, there are many benefits for you and your partner to discover in couples therapy. If you are interested in exploring these benefits and seeing what couples therapy can do for your relationship, consider reaching out to Thriveworks Counseling today. Just give our office a call. We’ll be here to get you all set up.

I love the format of telehealth in the evening. At a time where it's so challenging to find Psychiatrists, Thriveworks has been so easy to work with. And Ericka is lovely; easy to work with, easy to talk to, trustworthy, and very helpful.
