What is your go-to approach for grief & loss counseling?

An effective go-to approach for helping people in grief & loss counseling is helping them accept the reality of the loss, process the pain of grief, adjust to a world without the deceased, and find an enduring connection with the deceased while encountering a new life. The best benefit of working from this approach is that it will help people grieve normally and adapt to tasks of mourning within a reasonable time frame.

What tools do you teach in grief & loss counseling?

Tools that can be used in grief & loss counseling are as follows:

  • CBT: Helps people learn and use coping skills to manage negative feelings related to grief and loss.
  • Mindfulness: Helps people stay present and patient with their grief and focus on addressing their thoughts and emotions.
  • Narrative therapy: Helps patients review their life stories to gain insight and understanding.
  • Normalizing feelings: Helps people feel valid in their emotional responses by letting them know that their feelings are normal.
Other coping tools may include helping the individual acknowledge that he or she is in the grieving process, express feelings out loud or in a journal, get plenty of rest, set goals, practice self-compassion, and maintain a support system.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in grief & loss counseling?

The key indicators of progress in grief & loss counseling are as follows:

  • Increased ability to talk about the loss: A client can discuss the deceased person without becoming overwhelmed, share detailed memories, and talk about his or her feelings without excessive avoidance.
  • Emotional expression: A client can express a wider range of emotions related to the loss, including sadness, anger, guilt, but also relief, gratitude, and positive memories.
  • Improved coping mechanisms: The client develops healthy strategies to manage difficult emotions, such as journaling, relaxation techniques, exercise, or connecting with supportive people.
  • Re-engagement with life activities: The client gradually starts to participate in hobbies and social activities that he or she previously enjoyed, even if at a reduced level.
  • Acceptance of the loss: The client acknowledges the reality of the death and begins to integrate it into his or her life story, even if he or she still experiences pain.
  • Improved self-care: The client prioritizes healthy habits like sleep, nutrition, and personal hygiene.
  • Positive self-talk: The client is able to talk to his or herself in a more supportive and compassionate way about his or her grief.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement grief & loss counseling?

Clients can supplement grief and loss counseling by engaging in activities like journaling about their emotions, creating memory books with photos and stories, visiting meaningful places associated with the deceased, practicing mindfulness techniques, exercising regularly, maintaining a healthy diet, connecting with supportive friends and family, attending grief support groups, and engaging in pleasurable hobbies that bring them comfort or joy.

What should someone do to prepare for starting grief & loss counseling?

To prepare for starting grief and loss counseling, someone should: set realistic expectations, be open and honest about their feelings and experiences during sessions, research potential therapists with expertise in grief counseling, consider their preferred format (individual or group sessions), contact their insurance provider to check coverage, gather information about their loss, and think about specific concerns or questions they want to discuss with the therapist.

Starting Grief & loss counseling

What type of counseling is needed when a person cannot get over the grief of losing a loved one?

Grief and loss counseling helps people grieve difficult losses including the death of a loved one, the loss of a job, or the end of a relationship. It helps people navigate their grief process and eventually accept, understand, and move forward from their loss. Thriveworks grief therapists in Manassas, VA have specific experience, training, and skills that enable them to best support grieving individuals.

How does grief and loss counseling work?

Grief and loss counseling isn’t one-size-fits-all, but it involves sharing about your loss and then working with your counselor to acknowledge and accept your new reality in its wake. Your provider at Thriveworks in Manassas, VA will design your treatment plan around your unique needs and goals for therapy, applying the counseling techniques that best support them.

Signs I should seek grief counseling

If you have recently experienced an event like the death of a loved one, a breakup or divorce, the loss of a job, or another major life change, then you may want to seek grief and loss counseling. Grief can be caused by many experiences and events, so if you feel that you are having trouble moving on from a certain event or find that it is still impacting your life and functioning, grief and loss counseling can help you process it more effectively so that you can move on and once again find fulfillment and satisfaction in your life.

What counseling theory is best for grief?

There are many counseling theories for treating grief, one of the most frequently used being the dual process model of grief which helps people acknowledge who or what they’ve lost through rumination while also adjusting to the new roles and identities that this loss has now placed on them. There are also many commonly used therapy approaches used in grief and loss counseling, including Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and traumatic grief therapy.

Is grief counseling conducted in person or online?

Grief & loss counseling at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does grief counseling last?

For many, grief and loss counseling lasts for about 6 months. For others, it may last shorter or longer, depending on the severity of their loss and their grief.

I started with Thriveworks and Lisa 3-4 months ago and I was nervous about telling a "stranger" my deepest issues and things I'm not always comfortable admitting myself. I have to say she has been amazing through an really tough relationship break and other things I was or am going through in life. She makes you feel comfortable and truly listens, providing support and options for situations which allow me to be able to look at situations differently. She has made an incredible improvement on my life and I always look forward to meeting with her. It has become a breath of fresh air for me. She is amazing and I consider her a friend. You can't go wrong.

I worked with Lisa Cornelius for more than 6 months and she really is amazing. She helped me through my struggles by giving me strategies that could help me involve my well being. She is honest and she will connect with your situation by putting herself in your shoes. I've never connected with a therapist like I have with her. She really knows what she is doing. I highly recommend her!

Ms. Lisa is a very amazing counselor. She helps you understand and can relate to you, which makes you feel better. Her way of counseling is different from past counselor. It was more dull with my past counselor, but with Ms. Lisa it is different. It is better to me. I definitely recommend Ms. Lisa because everytime I leave I feel lighter and a little bit better. 😊
