Award-winning therapy & psychiatry
My go-to approach for child counseling is solution focused brief therapy with creative methods such as art, bibliotherapy, games, and other forms of play therapy. I prefer solution focused brief therapy because it emphasizes positive attributes and behaviors and how these can be applied to overcome difficulties. I appreciate the respect solution focused brief therapy has for clients, that it is non-judgmental and compassionate. I can use play and art to observe and gain insights into a child’s problems, help the child explore emotions and deal with unresolved trauma. Working with caregivers is also an important part of any counseling with a child.
In child therapy with solution focused brief therapy, I help children develop tools and skills, based on their current strengths, that they can use moving forward. These tools and skills may help the child
I know a client is making meaningful progress in child counseling when they see themselves as capable, strong, and wise. A client also is making meaningful progress when they and their caregivers can see a way toward their goals. Most of all, I know a client is making meaningful progress in individual therapy when they are experiencing hope and optimism. I get information on the child's progress through their behavior in session, and from family members' reports.
Caregivers can supplement their child's time in child counseling with keeping an eye out for when the child's problems are less present or gone altogether. The child can look for these times as well. The caregiver and child can then identify what is different about these times, and do more of what is already working. My favorite homework is that which we create/decide on together.
To prepare for your first child therapy session, caregivers should be sure to have the informed consent signed by both parents and provide me a copy of any custody agreement if there is one. Children and caregivers can reflect on: From the time you set up this visit to today, what have you noticed that’s already slightly improving? If you have done therapy before, what worked best for you? Children and caregivers can also think about goals for therapy. What would you like to be different in your/your child's life as a result of the therapy? Don't forget to bring a list of the child's current medications.
Child therapy, also known as counseling for kids, helps young individuals better understand and manage the challenges that affect their mental health. Common challenges amongst kids include behavioral issues, trauma, bullying, depression, and anxiety. All ages of children can attend and benefit from child therapy at Thriveworks Maitland.
Child therapy works by using multiple techniques tailored to fit the child’s needs based on their age group, their challenges, and the severity of their challenges. It might involve play therapy for younger kids or cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, art therapy, and others for varying ages. In any case, Thriveworks child therapists in Maitland, FL have the expertise and experience to help kids at their level.
Child therapy is a type of therapy meant for clients within a specific age group, while play therapy is an approach to therapy that helps children with self-expression and stress relief, among others. Play therapy is a technique that is often used in child therapy to help children express what’s running through their minds when they do not have the words to express their thoughts and emotions. It can get children to express what’s wrong, what might be causing unwanted behaviors, or what they might need in a way that is accessible to them so that therapists can then work to treat the issue.
It’s not always obvious when a child should see a therapist for their behavior, though in the midst of challenges like divorce, loss, bullying, and other mental health conditions, it’s often a good idea to seek it out. Common behaviors that can indicate a need for child therapy include separation anxiety, bedwetting (at inappropriate ages), and agitation/excessive irritability — especially if it reaches a point of physical violence.
Cognitive behavioral therapy at Thriveworks in Maitland, FL is one of the best types of therapy for children. However, it can be administered in child therapy sessions in a variety of ways that are more accessible to young minds, such as play therapy.
Child therapy at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.
The length of child therapy depends on your child’s needs as well as the goals that you and their therapist might have for them. Generally, child therapy sessions will last for several months.
