My approach for therapy is to first establish a good rapport with the clients. I welcome questions along the way, and, especially in intake, let them know they can share what they are comfortable with and that I will respect their boundaries.
Clients work with the therapist on a variety of different skills, such as learning appropriate communication (verbal, nonverbal, active listening), how to identify and establish healthy boundaries, and increasing a sense of connection and intimacy with each other again.
Clients start showing meaningful progress in therapy when they gain more insight into their issues and start catching themselves with old thinking and problem-solving patterns. Conflicts decrease as conflict resolution, appropriate and effective communication, and trust and intimacy increase within the couple.
Clients can do many things in their personal time to supplement therapy. They can supplement their time between sessions by working on some of the exercises and techniques reviewed with them in sessions. Various homework assignments can also focus on rebuilding the relationship and increasing connection with each other, and communication exercises help as well.
To prepare for your first therapy session, you can write down a list of questions and concerns to discuss. This can include current stressors in your life, past issues/events that have occurred that you may want to address, as well as current stressors and how long you have been experiencing them. Ensure that both of you are ready to participate in therapy. Of course, you will want to think about what you want to work on while in therapy, as well as what goals you both want to strive for.
Couples therapy and marriage counseling, also known as relationship counseling, helps couples work through their specific relationship issues. Some examples of common focuses within couples therapy and marriage counseling include:

At Thriveworks, Couples/marriage therapy is led by licensed professionals — often licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) — who are experts in their field and best-equipped to help couples.
The Gottman Method of couples therapy is a research-supported approach designed to enhance relationships by bolstering the bond between partners, resolving conflicts, and fostering shared meaning in their relationship through comprehensive assessments and tailored interventions that improve communication, trust, and the overall health of the partnership.
If you’re facing persistent relationship problems, communication breakdowns, or unresolved conflicts that are impacting your emotional well-being and happiness, Couples/marriage therapy may be beneficial for you.
While marriage and couple’s counseling is typically recommended for couples who are experiencing persistent or severe relationship issues, any relationship can benefit from attending these sessions.
Marriage and couples counseling at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you and your partner.
On average, couples attend marriage and couples counseling for 12 weeks. However, couples & marriage counseling may last longer or shorter, dependent on the couples’ needs, the challenges they’d like to work through, and the pace of their progress.

Another couple might need help with physical intimacy issues (sex therapy). And yet another couple might feel like they’re doing great, but they’d like tips on how to maintain their harmony in the long-term.
