My go-to approach for helping people in online therapy is dialectical behavior therapy. I prefer dialectical behavior therapy because it empowers the individual to understand their feelings and accept their feelings, even if the feeling is uncomfortable. Dialectical behavior therapy also helps the individual understand how to communicate their feelings to others and cope with their discomfort in a healthy and helpful way.
I teach the following tools in online therapy:
I know a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy when they can acknowledge and sit with uncomfortable emotions, both in and out of therapy. Learning how to identify a feeling and cope with that feeling is challenging, but being able to actively experience the feeling in the moment and without judgment is major!
Clients can supplement their time in online therapy with reflection and self-care. The majority of progress that a person will make happens outside of therapy. An individual may leave a therapy session feeling intense emotion, but the real work begins when they decide what to do with that feeling. Many clients report activities such as journaling, meditation, spending time with loved ones, or doing something to make themselves feel good can be essential to therapy being effective.
To prepare for your first online therapy session, make sure you are in a quiet and private location with a secure internet connection! You will want to ensure you have as few distractions as possible to allow yourself to focus and concentrate on the session. Come into your first session with an open mind and a few goals you would like to accomplish through your time in therapy. I also find it helpful to tell the important people in your life you are taking this step. It may help ease some of the anxiety and it may be surprising to learn who in your social support network has been to therapy themselves!
With Thriveworks, Online therapy is an effective alternative to in-person therapy services in which a client can speak to a Thriveworks therapist remotely via online video conferencing. Online sessions are just as effective as in-person treatment, but they can also provide added benefits like reduced travel time, saving money on transportation or childcare, and increased access to care.
Online therapy works much like traditional in-person therapy but takes place through secure video conferencing. Clients can attend Online therapy from any safe place they choose that has access to the internet, whether that be their home or another easily accessible place. Like in-person treatment, a therapist will work with their client to address their concerns, create goals, and establish an effective treatment plan.
There is no best option for online therapy—instead, it’s best to focus on finding a provider that meets your specific needs and with whom you can form a professional connection with.
Yes, online therapy is just as effetive for many clients as in-person sessions.
Online therapy can last for a few months to years depending on the goals and symptoms of the client. The treatment process will be unique to each client and lend itself to their specific concerns, which means that the time it takes to treat them will always be different. Timing is also up to the client themselves; they are free to stop therapy whenever they please, especially if they feel they have reached their goals and addressed their concerns.
At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay. We also offer self-pay options for those out-of-network or without insurance. Self-pay rates for talk therapy range from $160 to $240 for intake sessions and $135 to $195 for follow-ups, depending on your state. For psychiatry services, self-pay intake sessions are $255–$375, with follow-ups ranging from $175–$300, also varying by state. More information on current self-pay costs is available on our pricing page.
Sometimes, we feel like complete failures: We’re overwhelmed by stress at work and feel like a failure; we forget about our significant other’s birthday and feel like a failure; we exhibit symptoms of depression, despite our best ability to stay happy, and feel like a failure. We could go on and on, but the general gist is that we’re too hard on ourselves. It’s normal to struggle mentally and emotionally, despite our best efforts. It’s time to normalize not being okay and reaching out for help when we need it.
“A failure is not always a mistake, it may simply be the best one can do under the circumstances. The real mistake is to stop trying.” –B.F. Skinner
If you are struggling and acknowledge that you could benefit from working with a professional, experienced third party with mental health expertise, consider working with a counselor or therapist at Thriveworks —either in-person or online! Online counseling is here to help those who are looking for a more convenient option. To schedule your online counseling appointment at Thriveworks in Greensboro, give us a call. Or, keep reading to learn more.
The definition of online counseling is pretty self-explanatory: instead of attending counseling in-office, you get to meet with your counselor via virtual means. This might mean talking to your counselor on the phone for 90 minutes every other week, meeting with them in a video session for 60 minutes every Monday, or emailing with them back and forth every now and then. As with in-person counseling, the specifics can vary from person to person. The major takeaway here, though, is that in online counseling you can attend your sessions right from home.
Here at Thriveworks in Greensboro, we offer two main forms of online counseling: telephone counseling and video counseling. Both involve setting a day and time to meet with your counselor, whether that’s over the phone or on a video call. The major difference between the two is that in telephone counseling, that face-to-face factor is eliminated. Therefore, if that face-to-face time with your counselor is important, video counseling might be the right option for you. Regardless of which you choose, our online counselors will be happy to meet with you and to help you overcome the challenges that are prevalent in your life.
If you are between in-person and online counseling, unsure which option is right for you, know that this decision varies greatly from person to person. That said, you should make yourself aware of the online counseling benefits that you might not experience in in-person counseling. These include
Obviously, many people find online counseling to be more convenient and comfortable than in-person counseling. Why? Because they get to attend from the convenience and comfort of home or wherever else they prefer! Additionally, online counseling often offers greater reliability, meaning that you don’t have to worry about having to call in to reschedule or cancel your appointment due to unforeseeable events such as standstill traffic. Also, clients often have many scheduling options when it comes to online counseling.
Long story short, there are benefits that you might find in online counseling that you don’t get to enjoy in in-person counseling. That said, both in-person and online counseling are valuable services and have proven to help people work through challenging probems. So, in our opinion, you can’t go wrong with either.
In summary, online counseling might be the solution that you’ve been looking for. Not only is online counseling a convenient approach to counseling, but it often comes with flexible scheduling options and greater reliability. For example, you don’t have to worry about sitting hour-long traffic or debate rescheduling your appointment due to bad weather. You need only make sure you have access to a phone, computer, or another device, and reliable phone service or internet connection.
