What is your go-to approach for depression counseling?

My go-to approach for treating depression is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). I find the best benefit in CBT because it helps identify and reshape the thought and behavior patterns that contribute to depression.

What tools do you teach in depression counseling?

I teach the following tools in depression counseling:

  • Providing psychoeducation: Helping the client understand what depression is and how it affects them.
  • Behavior: Goal is to help the client do activities that will promote positive thoughts and a positive mood.
  • Thoughts: Goal is to identify inaccurate, illogical, or unhelpful thoughts and replace them with more adaptive and helpful thoughts and beliefs.
  • Feelings: Goal is to teach skills to manage or reduce distressing feelings and motivate individuals to engage in treatment. These skills are not a substitute for changing thoughts or behavioral activation.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling when their symptoms are assessed as decreased, daily function improves, and relapses are limited.

Depression — What Are the Causes and Symptoms?
