My go-to approach for helping people in couples/marriage counseling is the Gottman method. I find this approach supports healthy communication and connection with common sense and tools that guide you through the process of learning new approaches to problem-solving and boundaries.
I teach the following tools in couples/marriage counseling: how to be a great listener, how to make repairs after a fight, how to avoid pitfalls of relationships (criticism, defensiveness, contempt, and stonewalling), and short daily exercises to cultivate communication and connection, to name a few.
I know a client is making meaningful progress in couples/marriage counseling when they report that things are better, they are able to share successes, and also recognize when things don't go as well. They also report that emotional outbursts have decreased and communication is increasing. Each couple is unique and what feels like success is also unique, so I rely a lot on the reports of those I am working with as well as observations during sessions.
Nowadays, clients can supplement their time in couples/marriage counseling with podcasts and videos that support what we are working on. I like to recommend reading material, videos, and/or small activities I provide for them as well. I encourage each couple to find ways that work within their lifestyle to intentionally connect and communicate through hobbies, activities, or just being at home around the house. Whatever they choose to supplement counseling with needs to fit into real life in a way that makes it practical and meaningful.
To prepare for your first couples/marriage counseling session, couples should think about what they really are hoping to accomplish, both together and individually. It is important to take some time to self-reflect as well as consider things they may be doing that are not working. Understand that you didn't get to this place overnight and it takes time to do the repair work. Bringing patience and an open mind is a great place to start. It also helps to give yourself and your partner a little grace as you begin the process.
Thriveworks Couples therapy helps couples work through their specific relationship issues. It is led by licensed professionals — often licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) — who are experts in their field and best-equipped to help couples. Some examples of common focuses within couples therapy include:
Couples therapy works by helping couples identify and better navigate their unique challenges. Following an initial assessment of the couple in terms of strengths and needs, the therapist would then discuss their therapeutic goals and any possible approaches or ways of working together as therapist and couple.
Couples attend sessions together, whether they meet in person or by video. In addition to regular couples therapy sessions, each partner may also be asked to attend a few individual sessions to supplement their progress. This will allow their counselor to get to know each individual better, assess each of their personal needs, and develop the very best treatment plan moving forward.
Couples therapy at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and via Online therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you and your partner.
On average, couples attend couples therapy for 12 weeks. However, couples therapy may last longer or shorter, dependent on the couples’ needs, the challenges they’d like to work through, and the pace of their progress.
It’s highly possible that you and your partner are also experiencing relationship or marriage difficulties that are harming your connection, and driving distance between both of you.
