My go-to approach for helping people with PTSD/trauma is providing ample psychoeducation related to trauma, attachment styles, and EMDR (eye movement desensitization & reprocessing). I find clients best benefit from a blend of education and EMDR because EMDR gets down quickly to the root of any dysfunction you might be having and rewires the brain, rather than just chronically using coping skills to get by!
First, we start with building a toolbox of coping skills to not only help you get by better with day-to-day ailments but also help your brain and body prepare for the EMDR process itself. We also work through and process any day-to-day concerns you might be dealing with first so you know you are doing everything you can to help yourself. If and when coping doesn't feel like enough for you, you are ready to begin the EMDR process!
You will know that you are making progress in EMDR once you begin thinking and feeling differently about the memory we are working on; I hear clients move from a place of distress into a place of logical reflection. Ultimately, I will be asking you throughout the session to rate your distress levels on a scale of 0-10! You will start to feel better not only about the memory itself but also about the core issues that brought you into therapy in the first place (hint: they are connected).
Outside of EMDR sessions, clients can do the best they can to support themselves by maintaining an adequate diet and sleep schedule and following through with coping skills and any other lifestyle adjustments we have discussed along the way.
I always encourage clients to research EMDR, as it can sound kind of weird at first. Once I explain the science of how it works and give some examples of clients' successes, people are generally willing to give it a go and can make massive transformations in their mental health that are generally permanent and can take just a few sessions! Understanding a little bit about the process beforehand can be helpful prior, but don't worry, you aren't expected to understand how/why EMDR can help you—let us guide you in your journey! We can also still work on healing PTSD/trauma without using EMDR; come ready with your questions and do your best to be as open and honest as possible so we can help you.
Trauma therapy is a therapeutic approach that focuses on treating the psychological impact of traumatic events on individuals. Trauma therapy helps people process and heal from their trauma by guiding them through their trauma in a compassionate and supportive way, allowing clients to feel the full scope of what happened to them and eventually move on from the event(s). This process helps people who have experienced trauma find ways to feel safe in their lives.
Trauma therapy will often require individuals to walk through their experiences in a controlled and compassionate setting (unless the client has a dissociative disorder) so that they can fully process the event, an activity that will allow them to move on from what happened and feel safe again. Thriveworks Columbus therapists will also help clients learn healthy coping mechanisms to deal with their symptoms outside of therapy.
Thriveworks trauma counseling in Columbus, OH is conducted both in person and online through online therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.
If an individual is working through a single event that occurred during adulthood, they may only need a few months of treatment. However, in instances of childhood trauma or repeated traumatic events, therapy may continue over the course of years. Trauma therapy usually ends when the client believes they have met their therapeutic goals, however long that takes to occur. Thriveworks therapists in Columbus, OH will continue to provide care for as long as necessary to help clients meet their therapeutic needs.
How trauma manifests is vastly different based on the event, the individual response, and the time elapsed. The two things it always has in common are: no one deserves it, and it can have widespread negative effects on your life.
When trauma starts affecting your job, sleep, social life, and so much more, it can feel like healing is impossible. This is a real, valid feeling, but that doesn’t make it true.
