What is your go-to approach for grief & loss counseling?

The general approach to grief and loss is identifying and processing through the stages of grief and loss. I like the seven-stage model that ends with hope for the future

What tools do you teach in grief & loss counseling?

The tools are specific to the individual needs of the client. Guiding meditation with deep breathing exercises is often a good first step; journaling or other artistic expressions may also be helpful. There are various exercises that can be used to help facilitate grief and loss counseling.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in grief & loss counseling?

A client may be making meaningful progress in counseling if they begin to experience a sense of release and feeling of wellness and balance in their lives.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement grief & loss counseling?

There are many books and resources on grief and loss. Clients may want to come prepared to share their unique stories and journeys through the process.

What should someone do to prepare for starting grief & loss counseling?

To prepare for a first session, clients can write down, record, or think specifically about areas of challenge and what goals they have for the treatment. Together with a trained therapist, progress can be made toward wellness and a brighter, more centered future!

Starting Grief & loss counseling

What type of counseling is needed when a person cannot get over the grief of losing a loved one?

Grief and loss counseling helps people grieve difficult losses including the death of a loved one, the loss of a job, or the end of a relationship. It helps people navigate their grief process and eventually accept, understand, and move forward from their loss. Thriveworks grief therapists in Beverly Hills, MI have specific experience, training, and skills that enable them to best support grieving individuals.

How does grief and loss counseling work?

Grief and loss counseling isn’t one-size-fits-all, but it involves sharing about your loss and then working with your counselor to acknowledge and accept your new reality in its wake. Your provider at Thriveworks in Beverly Hills, MI will design your treatment plan around your unique needs and goals for therapy, applying the counseling techniques that best support them.

Signs I should seek grief counseling

If you have recently experienced an event like the death of a loved one, a breakup or divorce, the loss of a job, or another major life change, then you may want to seek grief and loss counseling. Grief can be caused by many experiences and events, so if you feel that you are having trouble moving on from a certain event or find that it is still impacting your life and functioning, grief and loss counseling can help you process it more effectively so that you can move on and once again find fulfillment and satisfaction in your life.

What counseling theory is best for grief?

There are many counseling theories for treating grief, one of the most frequently used being the dual process model of grief which helps people acknowledge who or what they’ve lost through rumination while also adjusting to the new roles and identities that this loss has now placed on them. There are also many commonly used therapy approaches used in grief and loss counseling, including Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and traumatic grief therapy.

Is grief counseling conducted in person or online?

Grief & loss counseling at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does grief counseling last?

For many, grief and loss counseling lasts for about 6 months. For others, it may last shorter or longer, depending on the severity of their loss and their grief.

Grief and Loss Counseling in Birmingham, MI—Detroit Therapy

Grief is a powerful emotion. It is one of the major life stressors; one that many people need help dealing with, possibly long after the death has occurred. Grief counseling is a form of therapy or mental health counseling that helps a person deal with their emotions and thoughts after the loss of a loved one. This is also sometimes known as bereavement counseling.

Even if a loss is expected, perhaps after a long illness, the death of a loved one causes a flood of emotions. Although we all know that death is a natural part of life, it is also one of the most painful. Sometimes, it is possible to process these emotions and feelings on your own. For others, the death of a loved one is too much to bear. If you think you could benefit from grief counseling, reach out to Thriveworks Birmingham, MI.

Signs of Overwhelming Grief

  • Replaying the days before the death obsessively
  • Cumbersome anxiety and possibly panic attacks
  • Disconnection from previous activities and hobbies
  • Struggles with anger
  • Avoidance of any remembrance of the deceased
  • Constant crying, or inability to stop crying
  • Sleeping too much or insomnia
  • Onset or exacerbation of addictions

Amanda is such an incredible mental health provider! I look forward to our weekly or bi-weekly sessions (depending on my schedule, she's always accommodating if I need to switch things up). She's my sounding board, and in the 18+ months I've been seeing her, she's helped me navigate through many of my long term struggles as well as the short term crises with patience and compassion.
