What is your go-to approach for anxiety therapy?

My go-to approach for treating anxiety is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). I find the best benefit in CBT because it is an evidence-based practice that helps anxious people learn the connection between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Gaining insight into the connection between these things can help rewire your brain and find alternate thoughts that lead to a better quality of life. This will also include some psychoeducation about the intervention of CBT and skill building to incorporate into your everyday life.

What tools do you teach in anxiety therapy?

I teach the following tools in anxiety therapy:

  • Grounding techniques
  • Radical acceptance
  • Breathing exercises
  • Meditation
  • Circle of control
  • Progressive muscle relaxation

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in anxiety therapy?

I know that a client is making meaningful progress in anxiety therapy when they are able to control their anxiety outside of therapy. The most successful clients in therapy take the skills talked about in each session and apply them to their lives outside. When someone learns how to live with an anxiety disorder, you can see it in the way they present themselves. They are calm and relaxed, speak with confidence, and know that they are in control of themselves and their anxiety.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement anxiety therapy?

There are so many different ways that clients can supplement their time in anxiety therapy. I often suggest books, educational videos, TED talks, etc. It also can be helpful to meet with your doctor to rule out any medical conditions that may be worsening your anxiety and to get set up with a healthy diet and exercise plan. Physical and mental wellness go hand-in-hand, and I have found that the food we eat and the things we do have a huge impact on people's ability to cope with stress and anxiety.

What should someone do to prepare for starting anxiety therapy?

To prepare for your first anxiety therapy session, you can create a list of things you would like to discuss in your appointment. The first appointment is all about getting to know each other and obtain a full understanding of where you come from, what you've been dealing with in life that brought you to therapy. I expect my clients to show up however they are comfortable, bring your favorite tea/coffee, grab a journal if you like to take notes, etc. and just be cozy. My therapy room is a judgement free zone and I'm here to help you reach your goals for your life. I value your input because I know that you are the expert of your life and I'm just here to help you navigate it.

Starting Anxiety therapy

What is anxiety therapy?

Anxiety therapy helps people better understand and manage their anxiety. Anxiety therapists at Thriveworks in Beverly Hills, MI can develop a treatment plan that will help you better manage your day-to-day anxiety or your anxiety disorder.

How does anxiety therapy work?

Anxiety therapy involves talking to a therapist about symptoms, potential causes, and more. Thriveworks Beverly Hills therapists will then work with you to determine where your anxiety might stem from and teach you effective coping mechanisms.

How to deal with anxiety?

One of the best ways to deal with anxiety is to learn about your own anxiety: your symptoms, what triggers it, and what coping mechanisms have been effective in the past. When you learn what your anxiety is tied to, it can help you be mindful of what’s really happening as well as prevent and mitigate symptoms by processing and working through the issue in therapy. Other strategies that have been shown to help manage anxiety are meditation, challenging anxious thoughts, exercising, and journaling.

Symptoms of anxiety

Common symptoms of anxiety include:

  • Sense of impending danger
  • Nervousness/restlessness
  • Trouble focusing
  • Excessive sweating
  • Shaking
  • Headaches
  • Stomach issues
  • Fatigue
  • Panic attacks
  • Increased heart rate

What is the best therapy for anxiety?

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can be incredibly effective in treating anxiety and anxiety disorders. Other effective techniques include exposure therapy, Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and EMDR therapy.

Is anxiety therapy conducted in person or online?

Anxiety therapy is conducted both in person and online, depending on the individual’s preferences and their therapist’s availability. We suggest choosing the option that best suits your needs.

How long does anxiety therapy last?

On average, people can tend to attend 15 to 20 session of anxiety therapy (five or more months). However, this number is heavily dependent on the type of anxiety that’s being treated and its severity, with many choosing to attend anxiety therapy for a longer period of time to ensure its effectiveness long-term.

Is therapy worth it for anxiety?

Yes, it is worth going to therapy for anxiety. If you are struggling with regular anxious thoughts and feelings that are affecting your day-to-day life or you suspect that you have an anxiety disorder, you should seek expert anxiety help.

I had the honor of working with Lindsey at a previous job and she is one of the sweetest individuals I have ever met. Lindsey listens intently to everyone and is open to people from all walks of life. Lindsey is knowledgeable and passionate about advocating for mental health. This makes Lindsey a great leader and counselor. I would refer anyone I know to Lindsey!

*****I have been a patient of Sandra's for nearly 2 years now and I really can't say enough good things about her work with me. She is a true Christian counselor and that was exactly the perspective I needed to guide me down the path God was trying to lead me. She definitely strengthened my faith and made many of life's big problems seem like small speed bumps when looking at the big picture!! I highly recommend Sandra Q. if you are looking for the someone who honestly cares about you and the journey you are on. Remember, there’s ultimately only one way to peace in your life, and that’s to walk daily with the Prince of Peace, Christ Jesus!! *****

The doctor (PhD) I saw for therapy decided, on the second session, to pay more attention to doing things on his phone than to listening to me. He thought he was hiding what he was doing behind his portfolio, but he was not. I could see the reflection of what he was doing, and he was looking down more than up. He was pretending to listen but didn't do a very good job of that, because when I stopped talking, he would incorrectly try to restate what I said or, make a comment on what I said which turned out to not be relevant because it was clear he wasn't listening. He did not seem to want to be there. It was a horrible experience. I called the next day to complain to the lady on the phone, and got a sincere "I'm sorry" and that's it. When I got the bill (very expensive, by the way), I have been attempting to call the office to pay it over the phone but I keep getting told that the people that do the billing are currently busy and that I should call back. It should not be that difficult for someone to take a credit card number and apply it to my bill, especially a bill I shouldn't have to pay due to horrible service. I hope the other therapists at Thriveworks are better than the one I selected, and actually have interest in helping their patients.
