Michelle Swanson is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 10 years of experience. She works with adults to address issues including bipolar disorder, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and personality disorders. She also assists with concerns such as grief and loss, relationship issues, chronic illness, and peripartum anxiety and depression. Michelle has spent time in community mental health, inpatient psychiatry, crisis intervention, disaster response, and medical social work. She has additional expertise working with veterans, seniors, and members of the LGBTQIA+ community.
Michelle has a Master's in Social Work from the State University of New York at Albany. She is trained in cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, motivational interviewing, solution-focused brief therapy, mindfulness-based interventions, and somatic experiencing. My go-to approach for helping people in individual therapy is to build a relationship of trust and comfort with each client to effectively work on skill building that will serve clients in the long-run. I find that building trust allows clients to process their experiences and emotions openly, creating a strong foundation on which to learn solutions for problems.

One of the most important things in therapy is the client's progress. I know a client is making meaningful progress in therapy when their mood is brighter and they are able to verbalize feelings of increased empowerment and improved symptoms. It can be hard to see progress, but part of what I do in sessions is help you 'zoom out' and highlight progress when I see it.
Clients can supplement their time in individual therapy by practicing the skills we discuss in sessions. The hour we spend together in therapy each week is a start, but in order to see lasting changes, I've found people have the best success when they spend time outside of sessions reflecting and practicing coping skills.

The duration of your individual therapy sessions will vary. The decision on the number and frequency of sessions is typically collaboratively determined by the client and therapist.
At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay. We also offer self-pay options for those out-of-network or without insurance. Self-pay rates for talk therapy range from $160 to $240 for intake sessions and $135 to $195 for follow-ups, depending on your state. For psychiatry services, self-pay intake sessions are $255–$375, with follow-ups ranging from $175–$300, also varying by state.
