My approach to online therapy directly mirrors the type of therapy session that happens in person. Most often people express a fear that they will not feel connected to their therapist through an online platform. The feedback that I have received from clients is that therapy through Zoom feels just as impactful, and oftentimes more accessible, as it allows them to pause their day without having to completely step away. My go-to approaches in helping people in online therapy include cognitive behavioral therapy, interpersonal psychotherapy, and narrative work. My role as a social worker/therapist is to cultivate treatment that works for the clients and meets their unique needs. Therapy is not a “one size fits all” model and every client has their own unique set of strengths and goals that directly impact how therapeutic approaches are provided and received. I find that therapy is most impactful and enjoyable when approached from an eclectic format.
I teach the multiple tools in online therapy. One such tool is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), which encourages clients to examine their thought patterns and begin to make connections with the feelings and emotions that these thoughts trigger. CBT is a popular technique in many different therapy settings, as it is highly researched and understood by the clinical and research community and can illicit and promote quick results. In my therapeutic practice, I find myself pulling for an eclectic approach and will also offer skills and te opportunities to practice and explore interpersonal psychotherapy, which honors real-life stressful experiences and makes deeper connections to how these experiences shape how we navigate life.
I know a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy when clients show up to therapy and are excited to share a difficult moment with me that would have once triggered and hurt them and how they successfully managed to work through it. My clients have also often expressed feelings of self-pride when they are able to identify how they are going to move through a difficult situation in the future.
Clients can supplement their time in online therapy by bringing what they have learned and explored in therapy into their everyday lives and systems. Coping skills and translating interpersonal wisdom into our everyday lives are what facilitate the changes and accomplish the goals clients are often seeking for themselves.
With Thriveworks, Online therapy is an effective alternative to in-person therapy services in which a client can speak to a Thriveworks therapist remotely via online video conferencing. Online sessions are just as effective as in-person treatment, but they can also provide added benefits like reduced travel time, saving money on transportation or childcare, and increased access to care.
Online therapy works much like traditional in-person therapy but takes place through secure video conferencing. Clients can attend Online therapy from any safe place they choose that has access to the internet, whether that be their home or another easily accessible place. Like in-person treatment, a therapist will work with their client to address their concerns, create goals, and establish an effective treatment plan.
There is no best option for online therapy—instead, it’s best to focus on finding a provider that meets your specific needs and with whom you can form a professional connection with.
Yes, online therapy is just as effetive for many clients as in-person sessions.
Online therapy can last for a few months to years depending on the goals and symptoms of the client. The treatment process will be unique to each client and lend itself to their specific concerns, which means that the time it takes to treat them will always be different. Timing is also up to the client themselves; they are free to stop therapy whenever they please, especially if they feel they have reached their goals and addressed their concerns.
At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay.
