What is your go-to approach for dialectical behavior therapy?

My go-to approach for helping people in dialectical behavior therapy is to emphasize validation and acceptance as core components of DBT, validating clients' thoughts, feelings, and experiences while also encouraging acceptance of reality as it is. Validation fosters a sense of security and trust in the therapeutic relationship, which is essential for promoting change and growth.

What tools do you teach in dialectical behavior therapy?

I teach the following tools in dialectical behavior therapy:

  • Behavioral analysis and chain analysis: I use behavioral analysis and chain analysis techniques to help clients identify patterns of behavior, thoughts, and emotions that contribute to distress and dysfunction. By understanding the chain of events leading up to problematic behaviors, clients can develop insights into their triggers and develop more adaptive coping strategies.
  • Commitment to treatment and target hierarchy: I work collaboratively with clients to establish treatment goals and prioritize targets for intervention based on a target hierarchy. Clients are encouraged to commit to treatment and actively participate in the therapeutic process, taking ownership of their recovery journey.
  • Progress monitoring and adjustment: I regularly monitor clients' progress in DBT treatment and adjust the treatment plan as needed based on client feedback and clinical observations. Flexibility and responsiveness to client needs are key principles of DBT, ensuring that treatment remains relevant and effective over time.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in dialectical behavior therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in dialectical behavior therapy when they set and achieve goals. When they set realistic and achievable goals related to their personal, social, and professional life and take steps towards accomplishing them, they demonstrate a sense of agency and empowerment in pursuing meaningful activities and aspirations.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement dialectical behavior therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in dialectical behavior therapy by practicing relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, or guided imagery, which can help reduce tension and promote relaxation in times of stress.

What should someone do to prepare for starting dialectical behavior therapy?

To prepare for their first dialectical behavior therapy session, an individual can work to consider logistics. Think about practical considerations such as scheduling, transportation, and payment for therapy sessions. Having these logistics sorted out in advance can reduce stress and make the process smoother.
