As a therapist, I offer a warm and supportive space where clients feel empowered to grow, heal, and thrive.
I'm Kate Hutchens, a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker with over 20 years of experience. As a lesbian-identifying therapist, I have worked with individuals from diverse backgrounds facing a wide range of challenges, including depression, anxiety, grief and loss, women’s issues, parenting, and special-needs parenting. I also support those exploring their sexuality or gender identity, as well as individuals who identify as LGBTQIA+, pansexual, sexually fluid, polyamorous, or gender non-binary. My priority is to create a safe, affirming space where clients can find support, understanding, healing, and personal growth.
I earned my Master’s in Social Work from Boston University, and I practice an integrative therapeutic approach that draws from person-centered therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), mindfulness, feminist, and humanistic theories. I believe in a flexible, collaborative approach that honors each client’s unique needs and lived experiences.
I understand being stuck in painful patterns or past experiences can feel isolating. I view therapy as a place of exploration, learning, & growth to reconnect with parts of oneself that may be struggling. This is your journey. My role is to honor it, bear witness, & gently guide you along the way, empowering you to do the meaningful work of change & healing.
You deserve dedicated time with a mental health professional — it can be life-changing.

LGBTQIA+ counseling is a type of queer affirmative counseling dedicated to assisting individuals and couples in navigating the intricate intersections of their sexual orientation, gender identity, and mental health, with a primary goal of fostering well-being, self-acceptance, and affirming a client’s life experiences as a queer individual. Although not all LGBTQ+ individuals seek specialized counseling, a substantial number discover vital support and empathy within these inclusive and affirming therapeutic settings.
Thriveworks LGBTQ+ counseling in Cambridge, MA typically begins with an initial assessment to understand your specific needs. LGBTQ+ counselors aim to create a safe, inclusive, and affirming environment for anyone within the LGBTQ+ community by encouraging self-acceptance and offering an understanding of your identity and experiences. LGBTQ+ therapy addresses issues like coming out, discrimination, mental health challenges, and gender transition, and provides support for LGBTQ+ relationships.
LGBTQ+ counseling is incredibly important because it can help queer individuals accept their identity, learn self-love, and give them important tools for facing the challenges of being a queer person in today’s society, among many other benefits. LGBTQ+-affirming therapists can understand the unique perspective and experiences of queer individuals as they help them process past trauma, address family conflicts, treat issues with anxiety, and more.
Thriveworks LGBTQ+ counseling in Cambridge, MA is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.
The number of sessions for LGBTQ+ counseling depends on the specific needs and goals of the individual. It could encompass a relatively limited series of sessions or extend into a longer counseling plan. The precise quantity and duration of sessions typically emerge through collaborative discussion with the counselor, taking into account the client’s progress and their therapeutic objectives.
Think about these sobering facts:
Inclusive mental health care is a significant need within the LGBTQ community. Everyone deserves to be loved and supported for who they are. That is why Thriveworks Cambridge offers LGBTQ competent therapy. We have helped many LGBTQ clients find the self-acceptance and healing they deserve. Reach out today to schedule your first session.
While some therapists are not competent to treat clients who identify as LGBTQ, others are (like those at Thriveworks). Here are some tips for meeting with a new therapist and determining whether they are a competent counselor for you:
A therapist’s main goal should be to build trust. Everyone deserves a safe space where they can share freely about their hopes and fears, opportunities and challenges, experiences and traumas, successes and failures. In order for clients to share deeply, they must trust that their therapist will meet their vulnerability with empathy. They must trust that the therapeutic relationship is a no-shame and a no-fear zone. Only when clients trust that they will be accepted for who they are can the therapeutic relationship progress. Then, the potential for healing is great. The potential for setting up a life that is founded upon self-acceptance and love is great. The potential for building a life that the client loves living is great.
Take a moment to consider what is happening in your life right now. Are you considering going to therapy? If mental health care is the right next step for you, the therapists at Thriveworks Cambridge are ready to walk with you.
We have helped many LGBTQ clients find the competent care they needed. In the processes, they have also found healing and acceptance.
